Activism

Activism

The word atheist has become a dirty word in our society. We're changing that. As we work for awareness and acceptance, we're also fighting the perception that this is a Christian nation and all that entails. Activism brings strangers together for discussion, and we want to encourage this.

Charity

Philanthropy

Many charities are dominated by religious institutions and in order to make a difference in causes we care about, atheists have had to stay silent and blend in or risk being ostracized. We want to declare ourselves moral without mythology and help our fellow human beings on our own terms.

Community

Community

A social and support network for the scorned segment of atheists in Kansas City is something we will continue to build. We want to help atheists reach out to each other and together develop a comfort level in announcing to the rest of the community their lack of belief.

About Us

The Kansas City Atheist Coalition is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization. Our mission is to advance atheism through activism, philanthropy, education and the cultivation of a positive secular community.

Inspired by the strides that local leaders have made in the community and with the encouragement of American Atheists leader David Silverman, several leaders in the Kansas City atheist community decided to form a nonprofit organization to encourage greater unity, outgoing activist efforts and charitable outlets for members. Above all, we want to offer our members a community of like-minded people while at the same time giving the public an opportunity to learn from us as “out” atheists.

We achieve this through organizing our own activism, philanthropy and community events, such as Ask A Kansas City Atheist, Heathens for the Holidays and Atheists in the Park and through promoting and partnering with other local groups whose activism, philanthropy and community events we support or share a common interest in, such as Slut Walk KC, Silent Vigil Protest, Freethought and Feast,  and AIDS Walk KC.

Kansas City has a vibrant community of non-believers, but many are hesitant to come forward as atheists for fear that they will be isolated from their religious friends and family. KCAC is building on the success of local social and educational groups by taking the next steps to reach out to those closeted atheists. We’re here put a friendly face on atheism and to let the local community know that atheists are among them, and that’s a good thing.

KCAC is in the process of bringing a Camp Quest to the Kansas City area! We need committed individuals to be part of a Camp Quest board of directors. We are especially in need of a treasurer. If you have a passion for children, freethought and the summer camp experience, please email Lindsey Burns at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We are also looking for experienced grant writers who would be willing to offer assistance.

If you’re a high school student in the Kansas City metropolitan area, consider starting a Secular Student Alliance chapter at your high school. If you’re a student at a Kansas City area university, consider starting an atheist student group within your educational institute as well.

KCAC would like to produce an official webcast in the future. We are in need of good equipment and skilled video editors. If you would like to donate your time and/or equipment, please contact us!

Q
Why is this organization needed in Kansas City?
A
Our city has a thriving community of non-believers, and many of us enjoy participating in the diverse options for socializing and education that are currently available. However, some of us want to go beyond that and reach out to the community through activism and inclusive charity efforts. As atheists, we are a minority in this area, and the greater portion of the population still sees us as the misanthropic caricature commonly portrayed in pop culture.
Q
What purpose does being a 501(c)3 serve?
A
As a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization, KCAC is tax-exempt, donations are tax-deductible, and we are eligible for government grants.
